Effects of Whole-Body Electromyostimulation on Low Back Pain in People with Chronic Unspecific Dorsal Pain: A Meta-Analysis of Individual Patient Data from Randomized Controlled WB-EMS Trials

The study presents a meta-analysis of individual data from five randomised controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) in people over 60 with chronic non-specific low back pain. Forty-five participants meeting the criteria for frequent to chronic back pain were included in the analysis; they completed a standardised WB-EMS programme or belonged to control groups. All included studies used a similar stimulation protocol, which allowed a reliable comparison of results. The results showed a significant reduction in both the intensity and frequency of back pain in participants undergoing WB-EMS compared with control groups. The authors concluded that WB-EMS represents an effective, time-efficient and gentle form of exercise intervention for people with chronic non-specific back pain. At the same time, they recommend conducting further larger randomised trials focused directly on this diagnosis.

The results of this meta-analysis provide strong support for the use of WB-EMS in patients with chronic non-specific back pain, particularly in older people who have a limited ability or motivation to complete conventional strength training. Thanks to its low time cost, its gentleness on the joints and the significant reduction in both the intensity and frequency of pain, WB-EMS can be a suitable component of rehabilitation, physiotherapy and preventive programmes focused on spinal health. At the same time, therapy should be individualised and based on the patient's current health status.
